Chapter Twenty-Four

“Not it!”

Zelma and Nico both looked at Elsa in surprise. In response, the monster hunter shrugged, removing a slender finger from the tip of her nose.

“Just beating gitface over there to it.”

“Did she just insult me?” Deadpool asked. “I think she just insulted me. Oh, and also?” he added, touching his own nose. “Not it!”

“Of course not,” Zelma said sharply. “Nobody’s it. We haven’t even decided we’re doing this.” Then she paused, taking in the expressions on what she could see of the others’ faces. None of them seemed to have nearly the same number of misgivings as she did. “… or have we?”

“Closing it behind them won’t be enough?” Nico asked, ignoring the librarian’s question in favor of her own. It was still an answer, though. One Zelma didn’t much care for.

She slouched in her seat, scratching at her temples, where unwashed hair and beanie met in a damp line. She was on edge and nervous, much the same way she had felt when she’d cheated on her driver’s test and was scared to death that the DMV employees were going to find out. Not that she was being dishonest with anyone here; she’d been transparent about both her concerns and her own limitations. But she still had that horrible sense of doing something she shouldn’t be doing, knowing all the while that discovery and dire consequences weren’t far off.

“I don’t know,” she complained, aware that she sounded like a testy teenager, but not sure what to do about it. She felt like a grumpy teen, one whose life was continually being upended by people who just didn’t get it. And in this case, what they didn’t “get” was that Zelma had no real idea what she was doing, but they still expected her to have all the answers, and that terrified her. “There have to be spellcasters who survived among the infected besides just Wanda. Maybe their hunger would keep them too distracted to magic a way out of the timestream, assuming we figured out a way to get them to enter it in the first place. Maybe not. Elsa?”

“Eh? Sorry, I didn’t quite catch that; I was too distracted by hunger.”

“Seriously?” Nico asked, a reproachful look on her face. Deadpool giggled behind his hand.

“Almost always, darling,” Elsa replied, smiling, before turning her attention back to Zelma. “At this point, unless they have an arrangement like mine and Wade’s, if you dangle a bloody flesh carrot in front of them, they won’t be sane enough to notice there’s a stick in the offing. Of course, the carrot’s going to have to be alive to really catch their interest, which may be a bit of a problem.”

The gears in Zelma’s brain were starting to turn now, mostly of their own accord. She was a pragmatist and problem-solver by nature, even when she’d much rather just be an observer. Or, better yet, not see any of it because she had her head buried in a book.

But her days of hiding in the library had ended when Doc got infected.
